Historic Preservation Month: History of the "Madonna of the Trail" Monuments (Adults)

Historic Preservation Month: History of the "Madonna of the Trail" Monuments (Adults) In-Person

In recognition of National Historic Preservation Month, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) member Diana Finney & Regent Kathryn Kesterson of the Paul Revere Chapter will present the history of the Madonna of the Trail, a series of 12 identical monuments dedicated to the spirit of pioneer women in the United States. These monuments, commissioned by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), were dedicated in 1928 and 1929. They provide a symbol of the courage and faith of the women whose strength and love aided so greatly in conquering the wilderness and establishing permanent homes for settlers. The monuments were installed in each of the 12 states along the National Old Trails Road, much of which later became US 40 and US 66, extending from Cumberland, Maryland, to Upland, California. Indiana's Madonna, affectionately known as Pearl, is located in Glen Miller Park in Richmond. In the summer of 2023 she underwent extensive preservation and restoration.
