Big Questions, Big Ideas (Adults) Online
Big Questions, Big Ideas has moved online on our Facebook page! This month, we will be discussing The Masculine Double Bind: Navigating Between "Gentleman" and "Beast" in Contemporary U.S. Identity.
In this presentation, Dr. Christa Hodapp (UMass-Lowell) discusses the nature of double binds in relation to gender, specifically focusing on what Susan Bordo describes as the “gentleman or beast” double bind present in masculinity. The demand to balance aggression with stereotypically “refined masculinity” (educated, well-spoken, chivalrous) creates an impossible situation for men, resulting in stress, frustration, and even violence. Using this framework, she highlighst the ways in which this double bind has: impacted men across various identities; influenced contemporary culture and politics surrounding gender and masculinity; contributed to extremist movements such as men’s rights activism, including Incel culture and extremist groups like the Proud Boys.
